What are proximity sensors used for?

A proximity sensor's basic function is to transmit data via an electrical signal when it detects the presence of an object in its vicinity. This is a handy piece of technology that has many applications in everyday life:

• Cellphones: Touchscreen phones use proximity sensors to detect when they're placed against a user's ear. This then turns off the display so the keypad isn't inadvertently touched.

What are the different proximity sensor types?

Although proximity sensors all work similarly, there are several different types that have different applications.

Capacitive proximity sensors

Capacitive sensors detect objects when they enter their electrostatic field. They are usually utilized for close-range applications like assessing liquid levels. One of the most common uses of these sensors is for counting products in automated production machines.

Inductive proximity sensors

An inductive proximity sensor creates an electromagnetic field via an oscillating circuit. Changes in oscillation indicate the presence of an object, which triggers the sensor. Magnetic proximity sensors

Magnetic proximity sensors use a magnetic field to measure the presence or absence of an item. One of the most common uses of this type of sensor is to detect whether a door or window is open.

Ultrasonic proximity sensors

Ultrasonic proximity sensors use high-frequency sound waves to detect objects. These proximity sensors emit sound waves which are then reflected, enabling the distance of the object to be calculated. They can be used to measure wind speed, fluid levels, and speed through air or water. The military uses ultrasonic proximity sensors in unmanned aerial vehicles to monitor objects in an area.
